Linda Mwananchi to raid Nairobi as Sifuna team faces key Party battle

NAIROBI, Kenya—The Linda Mwananchi movement returns to Nairobi on Sunday for what its leaders hope will be one of its biggest mobilisation events yet, as the group seeks to consolidate its grassroots presence in the capital ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Dubbed the “Mwananchi Tour – Kanairo Edition,” the campaign will begin with a church service at All Saints Cathedral before moving through some of Nairobi’s busiest markets and neighbourhoods.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, one of the movement’s prominent figures and a declared aspirant for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, has outlined a packed itinerary covering Marikiti, Gikomba and Burma markets, followed by Stage 17, B Center and Manyanja.

The procession is expected to move along Jogoo Road before ending at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East, where the movement plans to hold its main political gathering.

The Nairobi tour comes five months after Linda Mwananchi last held a major engagement in the capital and follows months of mobilisation across the country. The movement has since taken its message to counties including Mombasa, Kakamega, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia and Meru as it seeks to build a national political network ahead of the 2027 elections.

For the movement’s leadership, however, Sunday’s gathering is about more than attracting crowds. Nairobi remains one of the country’s most politically consequential centres, and a strong turnout would offer an important indication of Linda Mwananchi’s ability to establish itself beyond the political personalities driving the campaign.

The rally also comes at a critical point in the movement’s efforts to secure a political vehicle for the next election.

The faction associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been locked in a dispute over the registration and ownership of the Linda Mwananchi political identity. The Political Parties and Disputes Tribunal recently allowed Sifuna’s team to reserve the name “The Mwananchi Party” while also permitting the reservation and registration of the Liberty National Democratic Alliance, or LINDA, to proceed pending determination of the dispute.

The tribunal is scheduled to hear the dispute on Monday, September 14 — just a day after the Nairobi rally.

That timing gives Sunday’s mobilisation an added political significance, coming as the movement attempts to demonstrate that its growing grassroots campaign can be converted into a formal political organisation capable of competing in the next election.

Sifuna has previously insisted that the fight over the name is about protecting the movement’s political identity rather than simply securing a party registration certificate. The group has continued to mobilise under the Linda Mwananchi banner while the legal contest plays out.

Babu, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the movement’s most visible figures in Nairobi. His gubernatorial ambitions could make the capital a particularly important political battleground for him as Linda Mwananchi expands its operations.

Ahead of Sunday’s event, Babu has also met Nairobi aspirants associated with the movement as preparations intensify for the Jacaranda gathering. Among those reported to have attended was former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo, whose political ambitions in Nairobi remain unclear.

The movement has also sought to project the Nairobi event as a peaceful mobilisation after Babu warned against attempts to disrupt the rally. He has urged supporters to attend peacefully amid allegations that individuals could be mobilised to cause chaos.

Linda Mwananchi emerged from political disagreements within the Orange Democratic Movement over its direction and its cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration. Its leaders have since sought to position the movement as a vehicle for a more assertive opposition approach ahead of 2027.

The Nairobi tour therefore offers Sifuna, Babu and their allies an opportunity to test their message in one of the country’s most politically diverse counties, while demonstrating whether the momentum generated during their nationwide caravan can be sustained at home.

With the party registration dispute returning to the tribunal the following day, the Kanairo Tour will be watched not only for the size of the crowd it attracts, but also for the political message the movement delivers as it moves closer to the 2027 contest.
