Murkomen calls for CCTV surveillance in all boarding schools as investigations into deadly dormitory inferno gather pace
GILGIL, Nakuru County—The devastating fire that claimed the lives of 16 students at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, has taken a dramatic turn after investigators reportedly recovered CCTV footage that could provide crucial clues into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
According to information emerging from the ongoing investigation, the footage allegedly shows a group of students entering the dormitory shortly before the deadly blaze broke out. Investigators are now analysing the recordings as part of efforts to establish the cause of the fire and determine whether criminal responsibility exists.
The claims have intensified public shock and grief over a tragedy that has left families mourning, a school community devastated and a nation searching for answers.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has described the incident as deeply disturbing and warned that authorities will pursue all leads to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Speaking on the matter, Murkomen said the tragedy highlights the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and security systems in boarding schools across the country.
“We must protect our children. CCTV cameras can help detect, deter and provide evidence in cases involving criminal activities within learning institutions,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary announced that the government is considering measures that would require boarding schools to install CCTV surveillance systems in strategic areas as part of broader efforts to strengthen student safety and accountability.
Eight Students in Custody
Meanwhile, eight students from Utumishi Girls Academy remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Authorities have indicated that the students are expected to be presented in court on Tuesday as investigators seek further directions regarding the case.
Police have remained cautious about releasing detailed findings, insisting that investigations are ongoing and that all suspects are entitled to due process under the law.
The developments have sparked an emotional national conversation about school safety, student discipline, mental health and the growing challenge of criminal incidents within learning institutions.
Families Still Seeking Answers
Beyond the investigations and legal proceedings, the tragedy has left behind unimaginable pain.
Sixteen young lives full of dreams, ambitions and promise were cut short in a single night of terror. Parents who entrusted schools with the safety of their children are now grappling with grief and difficult questions about how such a disaster could occur.
Education stakeholders have also renewed calls for stronger fire safety measures, regular dormitory inspections, improved emergency response systems and enhanced counselling services within schools.
As detectives continue piecing together the events of that fateful night, the country waits for answers.
For the grieving families, however, the search for accountability can never replace what was lost — sixteen daughters whose futures were extinguished in one of the country’s most heartbreaking school tragedies.
