GILGIL, Nakuru County—Hundreds of mourners on Friday gathered at Gilgil Stadium to bid farewell to the 16 girls who lost their lives in the tragic Utumishi Girls Academy fire, during an emotional requiem mass marked by grief, prayers and calls for enhanced safety in schools.
The memorial service brought together bereaved families, government officials, religious leaders, education stakeholders and the public, who joined hands in mourning the young learners whose lives were cut short in one of the country’s worst school fire tragedies in recent years.
Emotional scenes unfolded throughout the ceremony as parents, relatives, teachers and fellow students paid tribute to the victims, remembering them as bright and promising young girls with dreams that were tragically cut short.
Following the service, the bodies were released to their respective families for burial ceremonies scheduled to take place in different parts of the country over the coming days.
Fifteen hearses had earlier departed from Naivasha Funeral Home carrying the bodies to the memorial service. One of the victims had already been buried in Kwale County after her family received permission to conduct an earlier burial, becoming the first among the 16 girls to be laid to rest.
The tragedy occurred when a fire broke out in a dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy, claiming the lives of 16 students and leaving several others injured. The incident shocked the nation and plunged families, friends and the education fraternity into mourning.
