NAIROBI, Kenya—Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that government officials and National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives attempted to establish the contents of his latest political address before he delivered it on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters, in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi on Tuesday, Gachagua said he took deliberate measures to keep the speech away from the Kenya Kwanza administration, insisting that the efforts to obtain it were unsuccessful.
“There have been attempts by government handlers and the National Intelligence Service to find out the contents of my address before I do it, but they have been unsuccessful,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader said he personally wrote the address and restricted access to the document, with only his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, helping prepare the final copy by typing it.
He used the episode to poke fun at what he portrayed as heightened government interest in his political activities, saying anyone seeking to obtain the speech would first have had to gain access to his wife.
“So, unless you get to Mama boys, you can’t get to me,” Gachagua said.
His remarks came shortly before he delivered his wider assessment of President William Ruto’s administration, nearly four years after the Kenya Kwanza government came to power in September 2022.
