The second edition of the Sisi ni Dola Super Cup has been launched in Mombasa, with organisers reaffirming their commitment to using football as a platform to nurture young talent and create opportunities beyond the sport.
The five-week tournament will feature 24 teams drawn from Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties competing for a winner’s prize of Sh1 million.
Speaking during the launch at the Mombasa Sports Club, Dola Group Sports Director Hassan Kipapa said the competition aims to bridge the gap between grassroots football and the professional game.
“Every football star has a beginning. The difference between those who succeed and those who do not is often opportunity,” said Kipapa.
He said the tournament provides a platform for players to showcase their talent before scouts, coaches and football officials, increasing their chances of advancing their football careers.
Kipapa added that apart from the cash prizes, the competition seeks to promote discipline, teamwork and self-confidence among young people while strengthening community cohesion through sport.
Mombasa County Chief Officer for Sports, Gender and Youth Juma Goshi Ali welcomed private sector investment in sports, saying such partnerships play a key role in keeping young people engaged in positive activities.
He called on more companies to support local sports programmes and football leagues throughout the year, noting that consistent investment is essential in developing talent and addressing social challenges affecting youth.
Goshi said the county government is also investing in sports infrastructure through the construction and rehabilitation of several playing grounds, including Ziwani and Mwahima. He added that plans are underway to acquire Bilima Grounds and develop it into a public sports facility.
This year’s tournament also marks the debut of teams from Lamu County, expanding the competition’s regional reach as organisers seek to establish the Sisi ni Dola Super Cup as a leading grassroots football tournament along the Coast.
The tournament will kick off on Saturday, with defending champions Fayaz FC taking on Magongo FC in the opening match.
