DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania—President William Ruto has sent his condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.

In a message on Monday, Ruto expressed deep sorrow over the death of Tanzania’s First Gentleman, saying Kenya stood with President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania during the period of mourning.

“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto said.

The President conveyed his condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady, his family and himself, describing Hafidh as a distinguished son of Tanzania.

Ruto said Kenya stood with Tanzanians in their moment of grief and prayed for strength and comfort for President Samia and her family.

“May Almighty God comfort President Samia and her family, give them strength through this difficult time, and grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest,” he said.

Hafidh’s death was announced on Monday by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said he died at about 8 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition. Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
