KILIFI, County—The Kenya Navy has stepped up flood preparedness efforts along River Sabaki in Kilifi County, targeting vulnerable communities with safety awareness campaigns and assessments ahead of the anticipated heavy rains.

The naval team, accompanied by county disaster management officials, visited several settlements in the Galana Kulalu area to assess potential flood risks and sensitise residents on precautions as the country prepares for the October-December 2026 rainy season.

The areas visited included Sabaki, Burangi, Mwangatini, Karimboni, Migumoni, Bate, Garashi, Singwaya, Baricho, Bombi and Divayo.

During the exercise, residents were urged to monitor official weather and flood warnings, identify safe evacuation points and move to higher ground whenever advised by authorities.

They were also cautioned against attempting to cross flooded rivers, with officials warning that strong currents can sweep away people and vehicles, resulting in loss of lives.

The intervention comes amid forecasts of above-average rainfall in several parts of the country, including Kilifi, raising concerns over possible flooding in low-lying areas and communities situated along major rivers.

River Sabaki is among the areas receiving particular attention from disaster management authorities because of the potential impact of rising water levels on settlements and livelihoods along its banks.

In September, Kilifi County disaster management officials announced that they had begun mapping vulnerable areas and sensitising communities ahead of the anticipated rains.

The county identified settlements along River Sabaki, River Kombeni and River Nzovuni as among those requiring special attention, warning that more than 80,000 families could face possible displacement, according to earlier preparedness assessments.

The Navy’s intervention followed a courtesy call to the Governor’s Office, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in search and rescue operations, evacuation and emergency response in the event of flooding.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen coordination between national and county authorities, particularly in ensuring timely response and assistance to communities affected by potential flood emergencies.

Authorities have continued to urge residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures early, heed official advisories and avoid crossing flooded rivers as preparations for the rainy season intensify.
