KISUMU, Kenya—Two students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) have been confirmed dead and 32 others injured after a bus carrying mourners from Mombasa to the burial of the late Elvis “Beast” Otieno was involved in a road accident in Nyando, Kisumu County.
According to a statement issued by Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Shariff Nassir on Friday, the bus was among five buses that had departed Mombasa carrying mourners travelling to attend Otieno’s funeral scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026.
Preliminary information indicates that the accident occurred in Nyando after the bus reportedly lost control.
Governor Nassir said two fatalities had so far been confirmed, while a number of passengers sustained injuries.
Some of the injured have already been evacuated by ambulance to nearby medical facilities for assessment and treatment.
The Governor said the Mombasa County Government was in consultation with Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary, Raymond Omollo, while security and emergency response agencies were attending to the scene.
“Our immediate priority is to ensure that every injured passenger receives the necessary medical attention and that the families affected are appropriately supported,” Nassir said.
The Governor appealed to the student fraternity of the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) and the wider Mombasa community to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information as authorities work to establish the full circumstances of the accident.
He also urged the public to allow authorities to formally notify families before the identities of those who died are released.
The accident occurred as mourners travelled to attend the funeral of Elvis “Beast” Otieno, whose burial is scheduled for Saturday.
“Beast” is former TUM Students Union president.
The County Government of Mombasa said it would remain engaged with relevant authorities and provide further information as details are formally confirmed.
