The Media and Communication Awards 2026 – Coast Edition have been launched, with organisers opening nominations for journalists, communication professionals, digital content creators and organisations across the Coast region.
The awards, organised by the Mombasa Press Club in partnership with Gilitics Media, seek to recognise excellence in journalism, strategic communication and digital storytelling while celebrating credible information and public engagement.
Mombasa Press Club chairman Omar Shungu said nominations are now open, inviting entries from journalists, media houses, photographers, videographers, communication professionals, corporate organisations and government agencies.
“Selling Mombasa does not mean selling an individual. We are selling our county. We need to leave Mombasa brighter and greater than we found it,” Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir said as he proposed a special award category recognising stories that showcase the county’s tourism, logistics and investment potential.
Gilitics Media founder Gilbert Were said the initiative comes at a time when ethical journalism and responsible communication are increasingly important in the digital age.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga urged organisations to tap journalists’ skills beyond traditional newsrooms, while Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mombasa chapter chairperson Abud Jamal pledged support to help establish the awards as the Coast’s premier media and communication recognition platform.
