WASHINGTON, DC—Former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga has taken his 2027 presidential campaign to the United States, beginning a multi-state engagement with Kenyans living abroad as he seeks to expand his political network beyond the country.
Maraga arrived in Washington, D.C., where he is scheduled to engage Kenyan diaspora communities, professionals, business leaders, civic actors and other stakeholders as part of the United Green Movement’s campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His United States tour is expected to cover Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, Minnesota, Houston and Dallas.
According to his campaign, the discussions will focus on incorporating diaspora priorities into the party’s manifesto and People’s Forum, increasing diaspora participation in elections and encouraging continuous voter registration.
The engagements are also expected to explore partnerships around investment, professional expertise, development and Kenya’s international relations. Maraga’s programme includes planned meetings with US congressional leaders, diplomats and foreign-policy stakeholders, as well as discussions on campaign financing within the law.
The US tour follows Maraga’s Ukatiba Caravan, which traversed 43 of Kenya’s 47 counties between February and April 2026. During the nationwide tour, the former Chief Justice held public engagements on governance, constitutionalism, voter registration and issues affecting communities.
The move to engage the diaspora extends that campaign beyond Kenya as Maraga seeks to build a political constituency among Kenyans living abroad.
Maraga formally declared his intention to seek the presidency in June 2026 after saying he had consulted widely with Kenyans, including young people. He subsequently joined the United Green Movement, which selected him as its presidential flag bearer for the 2027 election. The party has positioned his campaign around the message “Reset, Restore, Rebuild.”
His political entry follows a long career in Kenya’s Judiciary. Maraga served as the country’s 14th Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court from 2016 to 2021, after previously serving as a High Court and Court of Appeal judge.
His tenure as Chief Justice included the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in 2017 to annul the presidential election and order a fresh poll after finding that the electoral process had not been conducted in accordance with the Constitution and applicable law. The decision became one of the defining moments of Maraga’s judicial career.
Maraga has since carried themes associated with his judicial career—including constitutionalism, the rule of law and institutional accountability—into his political campaign. His campaign says the Ukatiba Caravan and subsequent People’s Forums are intended to provide platforms for citizens to contribute to his political agenda.
The diaspora has also become a significant part of the campaign conversation, with Maraga arguing that Kenyans abroad should participate in discussions about the country’s governance and development rather than being viewed only through their contribution of remittances.
“Let us meet, share ideas and build together,” Maraga said in a message announcing the US tour.
The Washington engagement marks another phase of his campaign as he seeks to translate the nationwide consultations conducted in Kenya into a broader political network ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
