NAIROBI, Kenya—The Law Society of Kenya has criticised the government over the recent fuel price hikes, accusing state agencies of imposing an unfair economic burden on Kenyans through arbitrary energy pricing.

In a statement issued on Sunday, LSK warned it could move to court to challenge the legality and constitutionality of the latest fuel pricing framework announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The lawyers’ body said the sharp increase in fuel prices, coupled with rising electricity tariffs, had worsened the cost of living and negatively affected households, businesses and the transport sector.

LSK questioned the transparency of the fuel pricing mechanism and demanded accountability over the Government-to-Government fuel importation framework and the Petroleum Development Levy stabilisation fund.

“The cumulative effect of these measures has imposed an economically unsustainable burden on Kenyans,” the Society stated.

The statement comes amid a nationwide matatu strike sparked by rising diesel prices, with transport services disrupted in several towns including Mombasa.

LSK also raised concerns over alleged police brutality during demonstrations linked to the fuel protests and called for investigations into reported cases of shootings and injuries involving protesters.

The Society demanded an immediate review of EPRA’s latest pricing guidelines and warned that failure by the government to act could trigger constitutional and judicial proceedings aimed at protecting consumers and safeguarding public interest.

The pressure now adds to growing public anger against President William Ruto’s administration over the rising cost of living and controversial fuel pricing decisions.
