MOMBASA, County—A medical camp in Jomvu Constituency, Mombasa County, has attracted nearly 1,000 residents, with the high turnout highlighting gaps in access to healthcare services at the grassroots.
The one-day camp, held at Miritini Complex Senior School, initially targeted about 800 patients but exceeded expectations as residents turned up for consultations, health screenings, dental and eye examinations, nutrition advice and medication.
Jomvu MP Badi Twalib said the large number of residents seeking treatment was an indication that many people still face challenges accessing medical services.
“The turnout is an indication that there is a problem at the grassroots level in terms of access to medical services. If there is such a challenge, it is our duty to look for ways of assisting our people to get the services they need,” Twalib said.
The outreach was organised by the Bohra Dawoodi community in partnership with Twalib’s office and the Kenya Red Cross Society, with specialised services including gynaecological consultations and ultrasound examinations offered during the camp.
Hamza Shura, the community outreach coordinator, said specialists had been selected based on healthcare needs identified during previous medical camps.
“This time we have a gynaecologist and ultrasound services,” Shura said.
He said the community had held four medical camps this year in Mariakani, Mombasa Old Town, Likoni and Malindi, where organisers identified demand for specialised services, particularly eye, ear and gynaecological care.
Twalib said patients found to have serious or specialised medical conditions would receive further treatment under arrangements supported by the community’s spiritual leadership.
Residents who attended the camp, including Idris Ali and Jamila Muhdin, welcomed the initiative and called for similar medical outreaches to be held more frequently in the area.
