MOMBASA, Kenya—The Sh45 billion Mwache Dam in Kinango, Kwale County, has reached 85 per cent completion, raising hopes of a major improvement in water supply across parts of the Coast region.
The dam is expected to help address persistent water shortages affecting households and businesses in Mombasa and Kwale counties once it becomes operational.
President William Ruto, who inspected the progress of the project, said the scale of Mwache Dam demonstrates the importance of investing in major infrastructure projects with a direct impact on people’s livelihoods.
Ruto said the government plans to use the National Infrastructure Fund to replicate projects of a similar scale across the country, with priority given to infrastructure that responds to key needs and improves living standards.
Mwache Dam is expected to strengthen the region’s water supply while supporting communities and economic activities that depend on reliable access to water.
The project is among major infrastructure investments aimed at addressing long-standing water challenges in the Coast region, where rapid population growth and expanding economic activity have increased demand for reliable water supplies.
During his inspection, President Ruto also commissioned the new Fulugani Comprehensive Primary School, one of the schools that ceded land for the dam project.
The completion of Mwache Dam is expected to mark a major step in efforts to improve water security in the Coast region, subject to the completion and commissioning of the facility.
