Concerns over rising insecurity in Nyali have intensified calls for enhanced community vigilance and stronger collaboration between residents, leaders, and security agencies.

Stakeholders say recent incidents reported in parts of Mombasa highlight the need for coordinated efforts to improve safety, particularly for women and children.

Communication strategist and security analyst Elkana Jacob has urged residents to take an active role in strengthening neighbourhood security structures, warning that continued insecurity could undermine social and economic stability in the region.

He spoke during a community engagement forum bringing together women’s groups under Sauti Ya Wanawake Pwani and Home-Based Child Care providers in Mombasa.

Elkana noted that insecurity cases reported in Nyali and surrounding areas point to the need for closer cooperation between communities and law enforcement agencies.

Recent incidents cited in the area include an attack on a woman escorting a child to school near Bombolulu Sports Ground, as well as another separate violent incident in which a man was reportedly injured.

He emphasized that such occurrences underscore the importance of vigilance at the household and community level, while also calling for stronger preventive mechanisms.

“No society can prosper in an environment where insecurity persists. Peace is the foundation of development and progress,” he said.

Elkana further urged parents and guardians to be cautious and mindful of the people they allow into their homes and social spaces, adding that community awareness plays a key role in prevention.

He also referenced constitutional protections for children, noting that safeguarding minors remains a shared responsibility.

His remarks were supported by Milka Moraa Ngare, a Mombasa County Assembly nominated MCA, who stressed the importance of strengthening family systems and addressing root causes of gender-based violence.

Ngare said empowering women economically and socially is key to reducing vulnerability within communities, while also urging residents to make informed personal and social decisions.

Chief Executive Officer of Sauti Ya Wanawake Pwani, Violent Muthiga, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting safe environments for women and children through advocacy and community programmes.

She said their focus remains on strengthening awareness, protection systems, and community engagement initiatives.

Elkana also expressed commitment to working with community-based organisations to promote safety awareness and empowerment programmes aimed at improving both security and livelihoods in Nyali and across Mombasa.
