NAIROBI, Kenya—The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has lifted orders that had temporarily halted the registration of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA), allowing Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s new political outfit to proceed with the process ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a decision issued on Thursday, October 29, the tribunal discharged its earlier suspension orders in case PPDT/E007/2026, filed by Allan Jayuga Akivaga against the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya.

The decision allows the Registrar of Political Parties to proceed with and conclude the registration of the proposed alliance in accordance with the Political Parties Act and other applicable laws.

The latest development removes a legal hurdle that had stalled the proposed political reorganisation of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition, which Kalonzo is seeking to reposition under the Ukombozi Alliance banner.

Kalonzo announced the proposed rebranding on September 21, 2026, following an agreement among parties within the Azimio coalition to adopt the new identity as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.

The reorganisation is part of wider efforts by opposition leaders to establish a common political platform and consolidate their political formations ahead of the next electoral contest.

However, the transition encountered a legal challenge over the proposed name, prompting the tribunal on October 13 to issue interim orders barring the Registrar from approving, registering or gazetting The Ukombozi Alliance pending further directions in the dispute.

The challenge brought the registration process to a temporary halt as questions emerged over competing claims surrounding the reservation and use of the Ukombozi name.

Thursday’s decision now clears the immediate legal restrictions, although the Registrar must still complete the necessary administrative and legal requirements before the alliance can be considered fully registered.

The development gives Kalonzo’s political camp an opportunity to advance its reorganisation plans as opposition formations continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
