Ukombozi Battle: Azimio move complicates Sifuna plan

NAIROBI, Kenya—The Ukombozi name has emerged as a fresh fault line in Kenya’s opposition politics after the Azimio la Umoja coalition formally adopted the name Ukombozi Alliance on the same day that details emerged of a regulatory hurdle facing Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s proposed Ukombozi People’s Party.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced on Monday that Azimio had unanimously agreed to rebrand as the Ukombozi Alliance, giving the opposition coalition a new political identity as parties reorganise ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The development comes against the backdrop of a separate attempt by Sifuna’s allies to establish Ukombozi People’s Party as the political vehicle for the Linda Mwananchi movement, with the Registrar of Political Parties declining to approve the proposed name.

In a letter dated September 8, Registrar of Political Parties John Lorionokou informed lawyers representing the United Democratic Party that the Office had not approved or authorised the proposed change of name to Ukombozi People’s Party.

The Registrar cited Section 8(c) of the Political Parties Act, which allows the office to reject a proposed party name, abbreviation, slogan or symbol where it closely resembles that of another registered political party or legal entity.

The Registrar said the proposed Ukombozi People’s Party name resembled The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA), whose name had been reserved by another applicant on July 20, 2026.

The timing has created an unusual political overlap, with the Ukombozi Alliance now becoming the public identity of the rebranded Azimio coalition while Sifuna’s camp faces a regulatory obstacle over a proposed party bearing a similar name.

Kalonzo said the rebranded alliance would operate under the philosophy of “One Term, One Team, One Coalition”, with blue and white adopted as its signature colours.

He made the announcement alongside several opposition leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and former Attorney General Justin Muturi. The coalition had been discussing a reorganisation of its structures and political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.

The rebranding adds a new dimension to the political restructuring taking place within the opposition, where established coalitions and emerging movements are attempting to define their identities and electoral vehicles well before the 2027 polls.

For Sifuna and his allies, however, the immediate challenge is more practical.

The Nairobi senator has been positioning himself for a presidential bid through the Linda Mwananchi movement, with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya among those backing Ukombozi as the vehicle for the campaign.

But the choice of political vehicle has already exposed differences within Linda Mwananchi.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has backed the Mwananchi Party as the movement’s preferred electoral vehicle, arguing that his party had been identified earlier in discussions on how Linda Mwananchi would participate in the 2027 election.

Babu has nevertheless maintained that he supports Sifuna’s presidential ambitions and has proposed bringing Mwananchi Party and Ukombozi together under the Linda Mwananchi umbrella.

The disagreement has turned the question of the political vehicle into a wider test of how competing ambitions within Linda Mwananchi will be managed as the movement attempts to transform its growing political mobilisation into an organised electoral force.

Sifuna’s position has also been complicated by his continuing dispute with ODM, where his removal as Secretary-General has been upheld by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.

At the same time, a separate dispute over rival attempts to register political parties using the Linda name remains before the Tribunal, with a ruling expected on September 30.

The two developments leave Sifuna’s political project navigating both organisational and regulatory questions at the same time.

The emergence of the Ukombozi Alliance as the new identity of Azimio also introduces a potentially important distinction for the emerging political formations: while Sifuna’s proposed Ukombozi People’s Party is intended as a party vehicle for Linda Mwananchi, the Ukombozi Alliance is a coalition identity adopted by parties that were previously operating under the Azimio banner.

There is therefore no evidence that the two formations are the same political organisation, despite the similarity in their names.

For the opposition, the developments point to a broader phase of political repositioning in which parties and movements are seeking new alliances, identities and electoral vehicles ahead of 2027.

For Linda Mwananchi, the immediate questions remain whether Sifuna’s camp can secure an acceptable party vehicle, how the competing Mwananchi and Ukombozi interests will be reconciled, and how the movement will position itself within the rapidly changing opposition landscape.

For the wider opposition, meanwhile, the adoption of the Ukombozi Alliance name marks another step in the effort to reorganise the political forces that will confront the 2027 General Election.
