Mombasa expands education support as 28,500 students receive bursaries

MOMBASA, Kenya—Mombasa County has expanded its education support programmes, with 28,500 students in public day secondary schools receiving KSh2,500 each in third-term bursary assistance.

The latest disbursement brings the county’s total support for each beneficiary to KSh7,500 this year. The package includes support valued at KSh5,000 through meals provided during the first two terms, followed by KSh2,500 in third-term bursary assistance.

Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir said the interventions are part of efforts to ease the cost of education for families and support children to remain in school.

The county’s education programme also covers Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), where more than 12,600 learners receive daily meals.

Each ECDE learner is also allocated KSh3,200 annually in capitation and learning materials, while the county has hired 160 teachers and daycare caregivers.

Eight new ECDE centres are also under construction as the county seeks to expand access to early childhood education.

According to the county government, the school-feeding programme has helped increase enrolment by nearly 30 per cent.

Nassir addressed parents of beneficiary students alongside Jomvu MP Bady Twalib, Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba and Members of the County Assembly, including Deputy Speaker Fadhili Makarani, Majority Leader Athman Mwamiri and Education Committee Chairperson Ibrahim Oyugi.

The latest bursary allocation comes as the county continues to position education support, school feeding and early childhood development among its key interventions in the social sector.
