MOMBASA, Kenya – Political pressure is mounting on Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, with a section of activists and youth leaders accusing his administration of failing to meet public expectations and warning that voters could seek a change of leadership in the 2027 General Election if the county’s fortunes do not improve.

The latest criticism came from Changamwe-based social activists who challenged Governor Nassir to demonstrate greater commitment to transforming the county, citing healthcare, environmental management, accountability and governance as key areas they want addressed.

Led by Jeremiah Simiyu Fwamba, Changamwe Elite Community Chairperson, the activists accused the county government of falling short in delivering on its promises, arguing that residents were yet to see the level of transformation they expected when the current administration took office.

Fwamba said the governor should prioritise the daily challenges facing Mombasa residents instead of focusing on political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Residents want to see tangible change in their lives through better services, improved healthcare, a cleaner environment and accountable leadership,” the activists argued, adding that failure to address these concerns could influence voter decisions in the next election.

The group also raised concerns over Governor Nassir’s appearances before the Senate, alleging that his responses to oversight questions had raised questions about accountability and management of public resources. The claims, however, remain allegations from the critics.

The criticism comes amid growing political conversations around Mombasa’s leadership ahead of the 2027 polls, with potential contenders increasingly positioning themselves and scrutinising the performance of the current county administration.

Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali, who has expressed interest in contesting for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in 2027, has previously issued similar criticism against Governor Nassir’s leadership.

Ali has accused the county administration of poor performance, alleged corruption and unfairness in employment opportunities within the county government — claims that have further fuelled debate over governance and service delivery in Kenya’s coastal economic hub.

The emerging political contest is expected to focus heavily on issues affecting ordinary residents, including job opportunities, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental concerns and the efficiency of county services.

Governor Nassir, who took office in 2022, has maintained that his administration is implementing programmes aimed at improving service delivery and transforming Mombasa through investments in key sectors.

As the 2027 election approaches, analysts say the governor’s development record is likely to become a central issue as rivals seek to challenge his leadership and convince voters that they can offer a different direction for the county.
