MOMBASA, Kenya—Nyali parliamentary aspirant and businessman Said Abdalla has urged candidates at Maweni Junior School to maintain discipline and work hard as they prepare to sit their national assessments next week.

Abdalla, who met the learners at the school on Monday, said academic commitment and discipline were essential in shaping responsible citizens and opening up opportunities for their future.

He challenged the candidates to honour the sacrifices made by their parents and guardians, many of whom struggle to meet the cost of food, education and other basic needs amid difficult economic conditions.

“Make your parents proud. They are undergoing economic hardships searching for food and money to pay for your education. Make them proud by getting good results that will take you forward,” Abdalla said after presenting success cards to the candidates.

The meeting was led by the school’s headteacher, Fadhili Saumu Salim, who also presented the success cards to the learners. The cards are expected to be distributed to candidates across Nyali Sub-county as they prepare for their assessments.

Salim said preparations for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for Grade 6 learners and the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) for Grade 9 candidates were complete, expressing optimism that the school would post encouraging results.

She said 274 candidates were expected to sit the assessments at the centre, which serves learners in the Maweni informal settlements in Nyali Sub-county.

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council timetable, candidates will undertake rehearsals on Friday, October 23, before the KPSEA and KJSEA assessments begin on Monday, October 26. The assessments are scheduled to run through October 30.

However, Salim expressed sadness over the loss of two learners who had been among the candidates earlier this year.

Abdalla also appealed to parents to remain vigilant and safeguard their children during the long December holiday, warning that a lack of constructive activities and supervision could expose young people to drug abuse, crime and other social vices.

He said the engagement formed part of his outreach programme targeting education stakeholders in Nyali Constituency, where he has been supporting schools and youth empowerment initiatives.
