NAIROBI — Kenya is set to receive a USD 2 million cash grant from China to strengthen its response to two pressing challenges — disease preparedness and drought-related humanitarian needs.

The support was formalised at a handover ceremony at the National Treasury, attended by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan, National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr Chris Kiptoo, and Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni.

The two sides signed a handover certificate confirming the transfer of the funds to the Kenyan government.

Under the arrangement, USD 1 million will strengthen Ebola preparedness infrastructure in counties identified as being at very high and high risk of the disease.

The remaining USD 1 million will support Kenya’s response to the impact of drought, providing additional resources as the country continues to address the effects of water and food insecurity.

Ambassador Guo Haiyan said the assistance reflects the friendly relations between China and Kenya, while reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to expanding development cooperation with Nairobi.

She said China would continue working with Kenya through platforms including the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Global Development Initiative (GDI).

For Kenya, the support comes as the government continues strengthening its preparedness for potential disease outbreaks while responding to the humanitarian consequences of drought.

National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr Chris Kiptoo welcomed the assistance, saying China’s quick response to Kenya’s request demonstrates its support for the country’s priorities.

The latest grant adds to ongoing Kenya-China cooperation, with the funds expected to bolster public health preparedness and drought relief efforts across the country.
